A Letter from Doug
Dear Friend,
I’m glad you’re here. Taking the step to consider therapy is one of the most important — and often the hardest — decisions you can make.
I earned my Master’s degree in Professional Counseling from Liberty University in 2012 and have been a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) ever since. I began my career working in Oxford and Sterling Heights, Michigan before opening my own private practice in Birmingham in 2018. Over the years, I’ve helped individuals, couples, families, veterans, and survivors of trauma find tools for healing and resilience.
My approach is simple: therapy should be built around you. I use a blend of Mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused strategies, and Narrative techniques. Sessions are always tailored to your needs — whether that means unpacking trauma, learning coping strategies, or simply having a safe, non-judgmental place to talk.
I am also proud to be a gender- and LGBTQIA+ affirming therapist. Whoever you are, and however you identify, you will always be respected, supported, and welcomed in our work together.
The happiest moments of my professional life are when a client shakes my hand and says, “I don’t need to see you anymore.” Not because I want to see them go — but because they’ve reached a place of strength, confidence, and peace. That’s the goal: not dependence, but empowerment.
As a veteran, my commitment to service didn’t end when I left the Army. I’ve seen firsthand how veterans face some of life’s hardest experiences, and how little support they often receive when returning home. My mission is to be part of that missing support — to help my brothers, sisters, and their families heal, re-integrate, and thrive.
If any of this resonates with you, I’d be honored to walk with you on your journey.
Warmly,
Doug Shimmel, MA, LPC, NCC
